Qualche volta ho nostalgia di Saigon.

L’aria appiccicosa, il ventilatore del Capitano Willard,  il fiume ininterrotto di biciclette e scooter, le ragazze bardate in lotta perenne contro il sole, quell’atmosfera unica che ti fa sentire al centro della storia, come la stella gialla su fondo rosso.

I mercati, i cyclo, gli improvvisi acquazzoni tropicali, i cacciatori televisivi sul Saigon river, la terrazza del Rex, gli incontri che segnano il corso di una vita.

Il Pho, il nuoc mam , il ga nuong, i goi cuon, e le altre delizie di una cucina semplice, troppo spesso etichettata con la discutibile definizione di franco-vietnamita.

A volte è una nostalgia dolce fatta di favolosi giochi di memoria, in altre circostanze, invece, è fredda e dolorosa, come una mano sfortunata di poker al tavolo della vita.

Sometimes I miss Saigon.

The damp air, the Captain Willard looking at the ceiling fan, thousands of scooters and bicycles lost in a never-ending traffic jam, the girls completely covered fighting against the sun, an amazing feeling of being in the centre of history, like the yellow star on a red field.

The markets, the cycle rickshaws, the tropical rainstorms, the TV hunters on the Saigon river, the Rex terrace, the encounters that change your life forever.

Pho, nuoc mam , ga nuong,  goi cuon and other  delicious gifts. A simple cuisine, too often just labeled with a generic name of  French-Vietnamese.

Sometimes it’s a sweet nostalgia, a fabulous déjà vu. Whereas at another time, it’s a cold and painful sensation that squeeze my heart, like being beaten by life on an unlucky poker hand.
