La luce artificiale può essere cruda, difficile e sgradevole.

Ma quando viene accompagnata da quella leggera diffusione, da delicate sensazioni di seta e velluto, da fragranze che rimandano a sogni lontani e perduti, diventa semplicemente meravigliosa.

Come la porcellana ed il profumo di lavanda.

Artificial light can be hard, difficult and unpleasant.

But, at times, it’s so soft, it brings a delicate silk and velvet sensation, a fragrance that reminds a far away and lost dream.

Then it turns into a wonderful fantasy, like porcelain and scent of lavender.

Rita Gisela e la sua morbosa curiosità, hanno regalato alla mia memoria, un pensiero puro, limpido e cristallino: la semplicità.
Quella piacevole, complicatissima arte del sottrarre.

Se non si possiede e non si padroneggia un linguaggio collaudato nel tempo, l’attuazione di questo principio è molto più che un incubo.
Aggiungere è facile, può essere anche divertente. Un po’ qui, un po’ là ed alla fine qualcosa viene fuori.

Ma quando veniamo alla fotografia – e alla vita – sono rarissime le eccezioni e queste non fanno altro che confermare la regola.
Perciò, ve lo chiedo per favore, cercate di essere lineari, cercate di essere essenziali, cercate di essere semplici.

Rita Gisela and her strong curiosity, let me think again to the pure, clear and bright concept of simplicity.
This is incredibly connected to the pleasant but complicated art of subtraction.

If you do not have and do not master a proper artistic language, facing this conception could be a nightmare.
Add is easy, it can be also enjoyable. A little bit here, a little bit there and, at the end, you’ll get something. Maybe it’s not that good, but it’s something anyway.

But, when we come to photography – and to life – there are very few exceptions to the simplicity rule.
So, I beg you, be plain, be essential, be simple.

Mi piace Shanghai e molto, ma non è semplice descriverne le contraddizioni.

Una metropoli affamata di internazionalità, al tempo stesso custode di un passato coloniale ancora così tangibile.

Due anime opposte che viaggiano a ritmi ed abitudini differenti, riuscendo comunque a rimanere perfettamente parallele, in una bilanciata alchimia di yin e yang,

La Perla d’Oriente ed i grattacieli del Bund, il quartiere francese, la Cité Bourgogne, le silenziose sale da tè avvolte in un incantevole mistero profumato.
Gli svaghi e la vita notturna, quell’abitudine, ormai sempre più rara, in cui il pigiama è simbolo di eleganza.

Le gallerie di Taikan Lu il quartiere metafisico di Pudong, il Giardino del Mandarino, la cucina dolciastra, i deliziosi dumpling di Xin Tian Di.
Le ruspe, le gru e la polvere che ti si deposita addosso, come se fossi un vecchio comò.

E nel bel mezzo di tutto ciò, il Jaguar Club, una rifugio fuori dal tempo e fuori dal mondo.
Creato e mantenuto dal folle sognatore Alex, nell’ex appartamento della segretaria di Chang Kai-shek.
Con le sue regole, le sue manie, le sue interpretazioni, la sua amicizia ventennale volata da Londra a Shanghai.
E se non piace…..accomodarsi!

I like Shanghai very much, but describing its contradictions, its international appeal and its colonial past, is not that easy.

Two symmetrical opposite souls that go forward in different ways, without losing sight of each other, in a perfect yin and yang balance.

The Orient Pearl tower and the Bund skyscrapers, the French quarter, the Bourgogne City, the silent, mysterious and fragrant tea rooms.
The amazing nightlife, the old habit to wear pyjamas in the street.

Taikan Lu galleries, the metaphysical area of Pudong, the Mandarin Yu Garden, the sweetish cuisine, the delicious Xin Tian Di dumplings.
Bulldozers and cranes. Dust on you, like on your grandma’s chest of drawers.

And in the middle of all that, the Jaguar Club. A shelter out of time, out of world, created and directed by Alex – a crazy dreamer – in the former Chang Kai-shek’s secretary apartment.
With his own rules, his weirdness, his long term friendship from London to Shanghai.
And if you do not like it…..just leave!
