“Hecha de luz, de sal, de piedra y pensamiento.”

A me ha confuso, come nessun luogo mai prima.

ENGLISH

“The Separate Rose”, Pablo Neruda called it, dedicating sublime verses to her.
The island wrought of light, of salt, of stone and thought.
Ancestral elements, indistinguishable, that have belonged to Rapa Nui since the dawn of time.
Five hours by aeroplane from Chile’s endless coast. Easter Island, so christened by the Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen, who stumbled upon it by chance on the blessed day of resurrection, 5 April 1722.
Thanks be to God—and to geography—that placed her lost among the lost; the Dutch first, and the English after, found no profit in lingering to steal her soul.
Theories as fascinating as they are bizarre vie for supremacy over this uttermost scrap of Polynesia. Without a shadow of doubt the most captivating, enigmatic and singular.

Winds and volcanoes forged her from the sea’s very nothingness; the Rapa Nui rendered her the legend that sets ablaze the hearts and fancies of every incurable, romantic traveller.
She bewildered me as no place ever had before. Her disproportionate magnificence cowed me until it stripped my eyes of every familiar bearing.
With immense effort I had to tame the obsession, the gnawing frenzy within, the boundless emotion that drove instinct to clutch vainly at reason, before I could restore her simply and poetically for what she is: the Isle “hecha de luz, de sal, de piedra y pensamiento.”

A thought born amidst the folds of chance

“Aerei, treni, automobili, autobus, barche, traghetti, carrozze, risciò, tricicli e scarpe consumate”.

ENGLISH

Many years have passed since those “ten years or a little more.” Yet the emotions linger, layered upon one another, like tempera on paper, like ancient breaths pressed upon the pristine white of a retro frame.
Snapshots that don’t chase perfection but cradle the moment. Pure inspiration
strolling through pastel hues and velvet, along a path more inward than geographic.
It’s an old project, a pre-social amarcord when travel was still about anticipation, surprise, struggle, and wonder.
You set off to discover, not to share. You got lost out of desire, not by mistake.
Photographs were precious memories, not obsessive commodities for likes and
followers.

These images, captured on Polaroid at the turn of the century, are fleeting notes gathered along the way, without apparent logic, yet always guided by that lyrical tension known only to the traveller in love with the journey.

“Airplanes, trains, cars, buses, boats, ferries, carriages, rickshaws, tricycles, and worn-out shoes.” Any means would do, as long as you were moving. No filters, no second chances. Ten shots. Just ten.
Visual notes chosen with the heart before the eye. Poetry as the rule, emotion as the guide.
Each click a small gamble, a final decision. No compulsive obsession, no burst of shots: only presence, intention, and a certain romantic naivety that, in today’s era of trigger-happy fingers and infinite memory, feels truly revolutionary.

The desire to capture a geometry, the curved line of an encounter, the chiaroscuro of nostalgia, the sudden sketch of a thought born amidst the folds of chance.

Author’s note: These images belong to the time in which they were born. The subjects could not always be traced, but each Polaroid is offered as a discreet and respectful tribute to the memory of the journey.

Più pennello che lente – A brush more than a lens

ENGLISH

It is your gentle hand that lulls me into sleep, that soothes the stubborn restlessness consuming me.
You are here, on tiptoe, giving meaning to these images, a brush more than a lens.

Memories lost among the streets of Seoul, the enchanted paths of Aoyama, the endless sea of Kyushu.
May these verses, with colors veiled from elsewhere, drift across your uncertainties, across my being a stranger even to the shadow that steals my pace.

Subtle fragments of myself, seeking answers too deep for the brief arc of a single life.

Nulla resta se non l’eco del sentire – Nothing’s left but the echo of feeling

ENGLISH

Time gently caresses a waiting that tells of a thousand and more unspoken words.
I am the wanderer poised in the untarnished grace of solitude.

We shall no longer be here to draw sunsets; to envision moments free of concerns or melancholies.
We shall no longer be here and now, chasing rainbows over a carpet of chrysanthemums.

Glimmers of happiness borrowed from a fate never entirely detached.
And yet, your inspiration still lingers above my pen, among those “precious-glass lenses” which gift my gaze with light.

Nothing’s left but the echo of feeling the poetry that lives within the Muse, and the Muse – indissolubly – within the poetry.

Vai avanti – Walk on

ENGLISH

Amongst these waves of sand and silk, walk on.

Like a pilgrim looking for himself, a friend on the way to Jakarta, a poet enraptured by the irresistible far eastern seductions.

In this rose gold symphony where I find again the airy years of your youth, walk on.

Along this silent softness move, without thinking, without waiting for life surprising you with unfulfilled desires still in your pockets. Listen, breathe and walk on.

Là, dove il marmo fluttua – There, where marble drifts

Umberto Stefanelli per TheUnique Magazine
https://www.theuniquemagazine.it

ENGLISH

There’s a place in Rome where marble defies gravity—it drifts.
Where shadows shun the past, conjuring futures never woven.
This is the EUR, born for an Exposition that faded, yet rising as a vision: vast, metaphysical, steeped in dreams.
Envisioned by the regime as a grand imperial stage, war transfigured it into an archaeology of might-have-been.
Its stern architectures, unyielding forms, and silences etched in colonnades and boundless voids proclaim a modernity stilled in time. A beauty bare, poised for
the lens, yet ever out of reach.

Federico Fellini cherished it, as one clings to a haunting dream.
In 8½ and La Dolce Vita, he treads its paths with burning eyes, seeking in
those silent halls the graceful relics of a world unborn. A realm where truth yields to the imagined.
Later, Paolo Sorrentino would seize its boundless spell.
In the Salone delle Fontane, in La Grande Bellezza, he conjures a Rome free of ruins or spires, where glory wanes in quiet, languid splendour.

The EUR does not speak—it summons.
It is Rome ascendant, gleaming, otherworldly.
The lucid dream of a city that spurns time’s march, yet clings fiercely to form’s eternal dance.

Pensiero nei mei pensieri – Thought within my thoughts

ENGLISH

I imagined myself in your bottomless eyes, among fragrances of mulberry and turpentine.

You came to be thought within my thoughts, under a sky of paper stars and brush strokes thick with folly, where I keep on seeing myself and seeing you… again and again. Amidst poised words, crystal, ice and mezcal.

Cathedrals erected in a desert of purposeless feelings and forgotten in the blink of an eye, like those too long awaited answers.

Yet still you’re there, on that pedestal of gold and saltwater, where I’ve left you, imposing utter sorrows and enlightened inspirations, in a time so far I can’t even recall.

Il Viaggiatore di Bellezza – The Voyager of Beauty

Buona Pasqua.

ENGLISH

My Muse longs for old-fashioned attentions and far-off lands.

Deep revelations and transparent light upon lexical shiatsu which takes the breath and the words away from the Voyager of Beauty.

Romantic replies to rhetorical questions. Sentimental tightrope walks on the edge of the impossible.

For a while, and yet a little longer, I wish you were here, bewildered by such lavish prose, so bare a poetry, filling me with charmed gazes and silences.

Wondrously lain on the flow of time, which will catch us happy just before letting us go.

Happy Easter.
