POLAROID 809 – Uno stile di ricordi e pensieri a sviluppo quasi immediato.

Umberto Stefanelli per TheUnique Magazine
https://www.theuniquemagazine.it

ENGLISH

In ancient times, style was referred to as a norm, as a model to be imitated, as a
canon that has normative and prescriptive value, but precisely because of this also
as a deviation because stylistic variation is the deviation from common practice.
Style has two sides: it is objective because it is an expressive code, and it is subjective because it is a reflection of an individuality.
According to a modern conception, however, style is related to genius much more than to genre, and becomes – therefore – an object of worship.

A retrospective from the drawer of memory this mixed technique that for more than a decade has almost exclusively characterised my photographic language.
Polaroid Emulsion Transfer or slides printed on large format Polaroid film. Collage with gold leaf (or various papers) on watercolour paper and photo emulsion transfer.
Color enlarger, dark room trays, hot water, paints, brushes, spatulas, transparencies, instant- development prints and time at will, for an exercise in patience in which craftsmanship becomes art and photography becomes mixed media.
Whole days and nights sacrificed, between frustration and pleasure, on the altar of experimentation. Unusual visual inspirations, unmistakable smells of chemistry, dirty hands of glue and acrylic for a sui generis photographic style, built on a desperate need for originality and assisted by a film more unique than rare, the Polaroid 809.
Unique pieces to celebrate my first Japanese inspiration. To return the comic city par excellence, the Tokyo of my first time, to the imagery of a time gone by,
between youthful intuitions and creative experimentation far beyond simple photography.
Totally personal sensations, following a thread of Japanese experiences, revelatory signs, mysterious mirages and incomprehensible ideograms.
A period of growth and enlightened suffering in which pure, endless poetry always and only answered to the name of Polaroid.

… e ti riempi gli occhi e l’anima – … and you fill your eyes and soul

Speaking of passion, each of us has our own and each of us cultivates or neglects it depending on the cases or circumstances that life grants us.

Mine is clothed in light, living in constant balance between sudden inspirations, shutter speeds and apertures.

A passion that has turned me into a gypsy, removing all forms of boundaries, nurturing visions, aspirations and hopes.
So many roads underfoot, shot after shot, in the impossible attempt to quench a thirst that “takes and grabs, demands and chases and fills my eyes and soul.”

A passion, at times unjustly neglected, before which I bow, for the privilege of knowing and knowing myself, for the pleasure of observing the inexorable passage of an otherwise empty and vain time.

A passion constantly conjugated with the feminine, but this exhibition is not meant to be a tribute to woman as such.
It is rather a refined way of observing and drawing with light. A photography of subtle thoughts, delicate nuances, paths of tulle, velvet shapes and pastel hues.

A Woman photography, of feelings, beauty, and elegance.
An ancestral homage to the sacred feminine, as the fertile and imperishable origin of all that we are or at least we desperately should be.

– Beauty is a woman. Like the elegance that leads my hand.

“Less is more”, un principio che, mai come adesso, andrebbe riscoperto e coltivato.

Umberto Stefanelli’s photographic solo exhibition entitled “Beauty is a woman – Like the elegance that leads my hand” will be held from March 24 until May 5, 2024 at Kayros Contemporary Art Gallery in Rome.
Forty images to celebrate “Beauty”, an irresistible Muse that has bewitched and overwhelmed artists of all kinds on countless occasions.
A constant presence that has seized their imagery, powerfully accompanying a multitude of expressive forms along a path that is now lost in the mists of time.

It is surprise beauty that is portrayed by Umberto Stefanelli around the world; unexpectedly captured among yellow-orange suggestions, artificial skies, uncertain transparencies of both plastic and crystal. Beauty harvested where you do not expect it, where haste, carelessness, distraction, misunderstanding, privacy and prohibitions unfairly impose a price to pay.

The austere, plain, clean beauty. The porcelain beauty of the almond-eyed Renaissance Novella Madonna.
Beauty celebrated without a pause or refreshment, amid salty inspirations, distant longings, sharp melancholies. Between barely hinted smiles, full laughter and follies to be bestowed to the drawer of memories for which it was a pleasure to walk barefoot on life.

That beauty that is inevitably mirrored in passion. A passion constantly conjugated with the feminine, but this exhibition is not meant to be a tribute to woman as such. It is rather a refined way of observing and drawing with light.
A Woman photography, of feelings, beauty and elegance. Subtle thoughts, delicate nuances, paths of tulle, velvet shapes and pastel hues.
An ancestral homage to the sacred feminine, as the fertile and imperishable origin of all that we are or at least we desperately should be.
Within the exhibition there will be a talk with the author (to be held on April 6 at 6 p.m. to be repeated on April 12 and April 19 at the same time) on Fine art and visual perception – Birth of an exhibition project – The smartphone as a photographic tool.

Umberto Stefanelli was artistically born in New York, where thanks to the incomparable pleasure of daring, typical of American artistic culture, he began to express his creativity, perfecting his photography and image reworking with innovative technique.

After the U.S., the secular revelation on the way to Japan.
It is here that his photography becomes mature, intimately bonding with the very complicated art of subtraction. “Less is more,” a principle that, as never before, should be rediscovered and cultivated.

Numerous partnerships, with both public and private institutions and companies, including Politecnico di Milano, IED Rome, MiMa Verona, Orvieto Fotografia, Polaroid, Levi’s Strauss, L’Oreal, Nokia, Epson, Grey Group, Young & Rubicam, Zoom Magazine, Nippon Television.

His artworks are exhibited in the Polaroid International Museum U.S.A., the National Museum of Photography in Brescia, the Galleria Civica in Modena, CIFA – Italian Center for Fine Art Photography, the Lishui Museum of Photography – China, the Shanghai Duolun Museum Of Modern Art and other national and international collections.

Since June 2009, he started at umbertostefanelli.com, a storytelling project combining images and words (photography and poetry at the service of creative fury) that is still ongoing.

Isole su isole e giorni cristallini – Islands on islands and crystal clear days

ENGLISH

For a 2024 of islands on islands and crystal-clear days to be drawn with a light-hearted and gentle hand.
A year of date changes, flight swaps and pace shifts.

A year of immense (and deep) blue, there to startle the wandering traveler that knows no boredom and does not yield neither to tiredness nor to sleep.

ENGLISH

Fuerteventura; land of sand, wind and blue at will.
Land of loose decadence, salty thoughts, far away inspirations.

Last enlightened outpost of a mad, evil Europe.
A Europe that represses, von after von, the free choices of the free man looking for himself.

La mia ispirazione più selvaggia e struggente – My wildest and most consuming inspiration

ENGLISH

I’m writing again, in the month of October, for a Muse who forced me to leave a lethargy that I believed impossible.
I’m writing again for her who was the endless source of my wildest and most consuming inspiration.

I sensed her fatal hand on my images of eyes, legs, glasses and misread fairy tales. A déjà vu of distant fantasies, prehistoric memories, mere hinted scents: matcha, chrysanthemums and red miso.
Differences of thought and overseas distances that leave no chance to the poet who chases.

But, despite everything, I kept praising her in a blind and barefoot silence.
A silence deaf to the mermaids of a fate that passes, marks, cuts and beats, without having decency to wait.
